To meet your license renewal requirements, it is essential to understand how your State Board categorizes continuing education (CE) credits. Hours can be classified into two primary categories: Live and Anytime.
The way these hours apply to your account depends strictly on the rules set by your specific State Board. Misunderstanding these categories can lead to hours not applying to certain requirements or appearing as "limit" or "excess" in your transcript.
Defining the Course Types
Live hours involve real-time interaction. This typically includes:
In-person seminars, lectures or workshops.
Live webinars with interactive Q&A sessions.
Real-time broadcasted interactive events.
Hands-on training.
Anytime hours (often referred to as home study or self-study) are completed at your own pace without live interaction. This typically includes:
Computer-Based trainings or Online courses.
Recorded videos or podcasts.
Journal articles or textbook-based exams.
Mailed Material or Correspondence
Common Compliance Scenarios
Your Board may have specific restrictions on how many Anytime hours you can complete, or they may require certain subjects to be taken exclusively in a Live format.
Certain boards require "hands-on" or "direct" clinical education. For example:
Georgia Occupational Therapists: The requirement for "Direct hands-on patient care" must be satisfied by Live hours. Licensees will not be able to select "Anytime" hours for this specific requirement.
Florida Board of Massage Therapy: The "Relevant to and Focus on Massage Therapy Techniques" requirement must be completed with an approved Live on-hands course.
Course Limits
Many boards place a "cap" or limit on Anytime hours. For example, if your Board allows a maximum of 12 Anytime hours and you complete 15, the remaining 3 hours will appear in your transcript but will not count toward your total required hours for renewal. You will see a message that says "Limit on Anytime courses":
How to Verify Your Requirements
To ensure your courses apply correctly to your transcript, follow these steps:
Log in to your CE Broker account.
Select the Requirement tab from the main menu.
Locate the specific requirement you are inquiring about.
Review the breakdown to determine if there is a limit on Anytime hours or if Live hours are mandated for that subject.
If you find that your hours are not applying as expected, check the "Course Type" listed on your certificate of completion to ensure it matches the Board’s criteria for that category.
