The Texas Medical Board (TMB) allows licensees to report CME Exemptions to partially or completely meet renewal requirements. Depending on the exemption type, you may be able to fulfill all continuing education requirements for your current cycle by uploading the appropriate documentation.
The available exemptions for Texas Physicians are:
- Becoming board certified or recertified by a specialty board
- Completion of training in a residency or fellowship
- Human Trafficking already completed in the prior 2 cycles
- Meeting the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program requirements
- Written request for an exemption - Active military service
- Written request for an exemption - Catastrophic illness
- Written request for an exemption - Other Good Cause
- Written request for an exemption - Residence outside the US
Understanding Exemption Types
There are two main categories of exemptions available for Texas Physicians. Some exemptions are applied automatically upon reporting, while others are routed to the Board for manual review and approval.
Exemptions that Fulfill All Requirements
The following four exemptions excuse all CE requirements (including Human Trafficking) for the current cycle only. These require a written request and documentation, which will be reviewed by the Board before being applied to your account:
Active Military Service: For military service longer than one year outside of Texas.
Catastrophic Illness: For a disability or illness that prevents compliance.
Residence Outside the US: For medical practice and residence longer than one year outside the United States.
Other Good Cause: For other specific circumstances that prevent you from meeting requirements.
Partial or Specific Exemptions
These options address specific portions of your requirements or carry specific limitations:
Board Certification or Recertification: Valid if you became board certified or recertified in the preceding 36 months. This is valid for one registration period only.
Residency or Fellowship: For physicians currently in training or who completed training within six months of their renewal application.
Human Trafficking Completion: If you completed the Human Trafficking requirement in the previous two cycles, you may report this to excuse the requirement for the current cycle.
Maintenance of Certification (MOC): For licensees meeting MOC or OCC program requirements that mandate specific CME credits.
