Texas allows Respiratory Care Practitioners to request exemptions that can fully satisfy their CE requirements for a renewal cycle. Unlike some boards, every exemption available to Respiratory Care Practitioners requires a written request reviewed and approved by the Texas Medical Board’s advisory board — there’s no automatic, self-reported exemption for this profession.
Understanding Exemption Types
All CE exemptions for this profession go through board review: you submit a written request with supporting documentation, and the board decides whether to approve it. None are applied automatically.
Exemptions That Satisfy All Requirements
Each of these excuses all CE requirements for your current renewal cycle once approved:
- Catastrophic Illness — a written request with documentation showing an illness or disability that prevents you from completing CE.
- Active Military Service — a written request for military service of more than one year outside the United States.
- Residence Outside the US — a written request for residence of more than one year outside the United States.
- Other Good Cause — a written request with documentation showing good cause for why you couldn’t complete your CE requirements.
An approved exemption can’t exceed one renewal period, though you may request to renew it with board approval.
Partial or Specific Exemptions
- Voluntary Charity Care — a retired Respiratory Care Practitioner who provides only voluntary charity care, and who is approved by the advisory board for renewal, may complete reduced CE equal to half of the standard requirement.
