Perfusionists licensed by the Texas Medical Board must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every renewal cycle. The renewal cycle is biennial, running September 1 to August 31, and your CE reporting cycle lines up with your renewal cycle.
First Renewal requirements
If your first license cycle runs 24 months or longer, you complete the full standard requirement described below. If your first cycle is shorter than 24 months, you’re exempt from CE entirely for that first cycle.
Mandatory Subject Areas
| Requirement | Minimum Hours | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ABCP Approved Credit | 15 hours | Continuing education approved by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). |
| Remaining Hours Required | 15 hours | General CE needed to reach your 30-hour total. |
| 40 Cases as the Primary Perfusionist | Yes/No requirement (no fixed hour minimum) | Complete 40 cases each license period as the Primary Perfusionist (or instructor) for Cardiopulmonary Bypass, ECMO, VAD, Isolated Limb Perfusion, or Veno-Veno Bypass. Upload evidence of all 40 cases at once and attest to completion. |
| Human Trafficking Training | Yes/No requirement (no fixed hour minimum) | Required every renewal. The course must specifically be approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) — other documentation won’t satisfy it. Hours still count toward your 30-hour total. |
Alternate path — ABCP Certification: If you hold current certification from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (or its successor agency), that certification alone satisfies your full 30-hour CE requirement for the biennium — you don’t need to separately document ABCP Approved Credit and Remaining Hours. Just keep proof of your current ABCP certification on hand to demonstrate compliance. This does not satisfy the Human Trafficking Training requirement, which you must still complete and report separately each cycle, and it doesn’t affect the 40 Cases requirement either.
A few general rules apply across all your hours: the minimum reportable CE activity is just 0.01 hours, and hours can be reported in increments as small as 0.01 hours. You’re allowed to repeat the same course for credit within the same biennium, and there are no delivery-method restrictions.
Simultaneously Applying Hours
Hours you earn beyond what’s needed for ABCP Approved Credit or Human Trafficking Training can roll over to count toward your Remaining Hours Required.
Banking Excess Hours
Excess hours from your current cycle can carry forward to your next cycle, with no maximum. However, banked hours can’t be used to satisfy the Human Trafficking Training requirement in your new cycle — you’ll need to complete a new Human Trafficking course each cycle regardless of how many hours you’ve banked.
If you have excess CE hours from before you started using CE Broker, a separate self-reporting option is planned for that.
