Medical Radiologic Technologists licensed by the Texas Medical Board must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every renewal cycle. The renewal cycle is biennial, running either March 1 to February 28 or September 1 to August 31 depending on your license, and your CE reporting cycle lines up with your renewal cycle.
First Renewal requirements
If your first license cycle runs 24 months or longer, you complete the full standard requirement described below. If your first cycle is shorter than 24 months, you’re exempt from CE entirely for that first cycle.
Mandatory Subject Areas
| Requirement | Minimum Hours | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Directly Related to Application of Ionizing Forms of Radiation for Medical Purposes | 12 hours | Coursework directly related to using ionizing radiation for medical purposes. |
| Category A or A+ | 12 hours | Formal courses evaluated by an organization recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism (RCEEM) or RCEEM+. ARRT approves the organizations that approve courses, not the courses themselves — You can find a list of ARRT-recognized approvers here: ARRT’s website. |
| Human Trafficking Training | Yes/No requirement (no fixed hour minimum) | Required every renewal. The course must specifically be approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Any amount of Human Trafficking hours fulfills this requirement and simultaneously counts toward your Category A or A+ hours (counted once, not twice). |
These two 12-hour requirements can overlap: if a course is approved for Category A or A+ credit under the Directly Related subject area, it counts toward both requirements at once. For example, if you complete all 12 of your Directly Related hours using courses that are also Category A or A+ approved, you’ll have satisfied both subject-area minimums — but you’ll still need 12 more hours to reach your 24-hour total. Those additional hours don’t have to be Category A or A+; they can come from any of the Additional Subject Areas below, from Human Trafficking Training, or from any other board-recognized CE.
Additional Subject Areas
These aren’t required on their own, but hours in these areas can count toward your Category A or A+ requirement (where noted) or your remaining hours:
- Related to Application of Non-Ionizing Forms of Radiation for Medical Purposes (Category A or A+, or not)
- Indirectly Related to Radiologic Technology (Category A or A+, or not)
- CPR or Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
A few limits apply to these: no more than 50% of your total required hours may come from non-ionizing-radiation coursework, and no more than 50% may come from courses only indirectly related to radiologic technology. CPR/Basic Cardiac Life Support courses are capped at 3 hours per renewal period, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses are capped at 6 hours per renewal period.
A few general rules apply across all your hours: the minimum reportable CE activity is just 0.01 hours, hours can be reported in increments as small as 0.01, and you’re allowed to repeat the same course for credit within the same biennium. There are no delivery-method restrictions.
Banking Excess Hours
You can carry up to 48 excess hours forward into your next renewal cycle, in any subject area except Human Trafficking Training — you’ll need a new Human Trafficking course each cycle regardless of banked hours.
