Radiologist Assistant Certificate holders licensed by the Texas Medical Board must complete 23 hours of continuing education (CE) every renewal cycle, and unlike the other radiologic professions, all 23 hours must be Category A or A+. The renewal cycle is biennial, running either March 1 to February 28 or September 1 to August 31 depending on your license, and your CE reporting cycle lines up with your renewal cycle.
First Renewal requirements
If your first license cycle runs 24 months or longer, you complete the full standard requirement described below. If your first cycle is shorter than 24 months, you’re exempt from CE entirely for that first cycle.
Mandatory Subject Areas
| Requirement | Minimum Hours | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Directly Related to Application of Ionizing Forms of Radiation for Medical Purposes (Category A or A+) | 11.5 hours | Coursework directly related to using ionizing radiation for medical purposes, evaluated for Category A or A+ credit by an ARRT-recognized organization. |
| Remaining Hours Required (must be Category A or A+) | 11.5 hours | The rest of your total, also evaluated for Category A or A+ credit. This can come from courses Directly Related to ionizing radiation, Related to Non-Ionizing Forms of Radiation (Category A or A+ version), or Indirectly Related to Radiologic Technology (Category A or A+ version). |
| Human Trafficking Training | Yes/No requirement (no fixed hour minimum) | Required every renewal. The course must specifically be approved by HHSC. Any amount of Human Trafficking hours fulfills this requirement and counts toward your Remaining Hours Required, even though Human Trafficking courses aren’t themselves Category A or A+ credit. |
Unlike the other radiologic professions, your Directly Related hours don’t automatically double-count toward Remaining Hours Required here. At least 50% of your total hours must be Directly Related to ionizing radiation specifically, and 100% must be Category A or A+ — so a Directly Related course only counts once, toward that 50% minimum, not toward both buckets at once.
You can find a list of ARRT-recognized approvers here: ARRT’s website.
A few general rules apply across all your hours: the minimum reportable CE activity is just 0.01 hours, hours can be reported in increments as small as 0.01, and you’re allowed to repeat the same course for credit within the same biennium. There are no delivery-method restrictions.
Banking Excess Hours
You can carry up to 48 excess hours forward into your next renewal cycle, in any subject area except Human Trafficking Training — you’ll need a new Human Trafficking course each cycle regardless of banked hours.
